One Word Wednesday: A Simple Reflection to Ease Your Week

A Simple Reflection to Ease Your Week

Each week, I choose one word that captures something I’ve been learning, feeling, or noticing in my everyday life as a mom.

These Wednesday reflections are my way of slowing down- giving thoughts room to stretch and breathe- especially in a season when the world speeds up.

This week’s word is:

WONDER

Webster’s defines wonder as:

“a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable.”

And really… isn’t that Christmas in a nutshell?

December has a way of slipping into our homes with a soft glow- warm lights on chilly evenings, the rustle of wrapping paper, the sound of your child gasping at the first snow.

Wonder shows up in tiny sparkles if you’re paying attention.

But here’s the thing about motherhood in December:

We’re usually the ones making the wonder.

We do the planning.

Prepping.

Remembering.

The magic-making that nobody sees but everyone feels.

And in that swirl of responsibility, our own sense of wonder gets… a little buried.

Not gone.

Just tucked in the corners behind the to-do lists, grocery bags, school concerts, holiday errands, and the exhaustion that feels heavier in winter.

But wonder wasn’t meant to be a childhood-only feeling.

Wonder belongs to you, too.

It lives in the way the lights reflect on your child’s face as they decorate the tree.

It’s in the smell of cinnamon when you open the oven.

In the moment the house finally quiets down, and the world feels soft again.

It’s in the first deep breath you take after a long day of holding everything together.

Wonder isn’t loud.

It doesn’t knock.

It whispers.

Look closer.

Slow down.

Don’t rush past the beautiful parts you worked so hard to create.

The truth we forget is this:

You deserve to feel the magic you make for everyone else.

Wonder has nothing to do with perfection.

It’s not the expensive gifts, the flawless decorations, or the color-coded wrapping paper (although yes, those are fun).

Wonder is found in the small, unplanned moments- the ones that slip through the cracks unless you pause long enough to notice them.

Maybe wonder looks like:

A warm mug between cold hands.

A candle flickering on the counter.

The hush of nighttime after a long, full day.

A child’s laughter echoing down the hallway.

A moment where your heart softens for no practical reason at all.

Let this week be a reminder that wonder isn’t something you give away until there’s none left for you.

It’s something that grows each time you let yourself slow down and see what’s already here.

You don’t have to chase it.

You just have to look up long enough to catch it.

Wonder isn’t something you create- it’s something you let in.”

So, if this week feels busy, or heavy, or a little too full… let wonder be the tiny doorway back to yourself.

Pause for one second longer.

Look at the lights.

Listen to your home.

Let something ordinary feel magical again.

If this word resonated with you, I’d love for you to share your moment of wonder this week- big or small.

Your story might be exactly what another mom needs to remember that magic still exists… even for her.
